The short version
- Back up the device.
- Make sure iCloud syncing has finished.
- Review forgotten private photos and videos.
- Remove Wallet cards and passes when Apple instructs you to.
- Turn off Find My only as part of the official service process.
- Never give a technician your Apple Account password or device passcode.
- If software support requires you to unlock the device, remain present.
Apple’s checklist can change. Confirm the steps for your appointment before you leave home.
1. Back up before changing or deleting anything
A repair can involve replacement or erasure. Apple recommends backing up the iPhone or iPad before service and notes that a returned device may need to be restored from an existing backup.
If you use iCloud, confirm the status indicator for Saved to iCloud is green. If you use an encrypted computer backup, verify that the backup completes before proceeding.
2. Review the media you forgot existed
Manually inspect Hidden, Recently Deleted, screenshots, videos, and older years. The Hidden collection only contains items you previously chose to hide, so it cannot reveal private media you forgot to classify.
Sensitivity can scan a chosen photo-library range on device and create a smaller set of likely matches for you to review. Detection is not perfect, and nothing is deleted automatically.
3. Decide whether to hide or delete
Use Apple’s Hidden collection when you want to retain an item but keep it out of the main Library. Delete only when you are sure. With iCloud Photos enabled, hiding or deleting an item affects your other connected devices as well.
Apple keeps deleted media in Recently Deleted for 30 days unless you permanently remove it. If the goal is to remove a photo before a repair, check Recently Deleted after the first deletion.
4. Protect passwords and device access
Apple states that neither Apple nor an Apple Authorized Service Provider will ask for your Apple Account password, device passcode, or account security details. For software support, you might be asked to enter a password or passcode yourself. Apple advises remaining present while the technician has access.
5. Complete Apple’s remaining service steps
Depending on the device and service, Apple’s checklist includes removing Wallet cards and passes, checking Parts and Service History, and turning off Find My. These steps affect service eligibility and device security, so follow the current instructions rather than relying on an old checklist.
Repair is different from selling or trading in
For a permanent handoff, selective cleanup is not enough. Back up what you need and erase all content and settings. Apple’s trade-in guidance explicitly calls for backing up and erasing the device before sending it away.
