Google Photos Takeout on Mac: Review Private Media Before Sharing

A Takeout export creates another set of files; it does not remove the originals from Google. Before sharing that export, review the expanded media and the information stored alongside it.

From export to a reviewed copy

Review the media and the files around it

  1. Select the export

Confirm the account and the Google Photos data included.

  2. Expand every part

Download all intended ZIPs and keep extraction folders distinct.

  3. Inspect local media

Choose the extracted folder; check photos and videos separately.

  4. Review other information

Inspect JSON, filenames and embedded details before sharing.

Editing an expanded file does not change the original ZIP or remove the copy still held by Google.

Export the Google Photos data you intend to review

Open Google Takeout with the correct account. Other services can be selected automatically: deselect them if you only need Google Photos. Review the available Photos selection, then choose a one-time export and ZIP for this Mac workflow. The official download guide explains delivery and archive settings.

Choose where the export will arrive. Sending it to another cloud service creates a copy there too. An export may omit recent changes between the request and archive creation, so treat it as the selected export, not proof that every private image in the account is included.

Download and expand every archive part

When the data exceeds your chosen archive size, Takeout creates multiple archives. Retrieve every part of the export you intend to inspect. Use a private local review folder, check whether that location is shared or synchronized, and allow room for both the downloads and expanded files.

On Mac, double-click a ZIP to expand it; Apple explains that the contents appear in the same folder. Separate subfolders for different parts help avoid overwriting matching names. A successfully opened first ZIP does not establish that the other parts were downloaded or reviewed.

Scan the expanded folder on Mac

In Sensitivity for Mac, choose the folder source and select the extracted review folder. This is separate from Apple Photos. The app reviews supported, locally available media you authorize; it does not unpack ZIPs or inspect your Google account. Our Mac folder guide explains the source choice.

For the whole export, select the full date range and check the scan’s scope and completion status. Check video analysis separately: finishing a photo scan does not mean the videos were analyzed. If items are missing, verify local availability, supported formats and the selected scan scope.

Keep dates and JSON metadata in view

Google notes that a downloaded file can receive a new filesystem timestamp while its original timestamp remains embedded in the media. A Finder date is therefore not necessarily the capture date. This matters when you use a date filter to decide which files to inspect.

Additional data not in the original file, such as Google Photos comments, is exported in secondary JSON files. Preserve sidecars you still need and review them manually before sharing. Media classification does not sanitize JSON, filenames, documents or embedded location data.

Share the reviewed result, not an untouched archive

Sensitivity can suggest likely nude or sexual photos and videos; check each suggestion because harmless items can be flagged and private media can be missed. A scan is neither an export-completeness check nor a guarantee that all personal information has been found.

Changing an extracted photo does not rewrite the original ZIP or delete the Google copy. Keep needed originals until you verify a usable backup, and confirm the exact files and metadata you plan to send. Do not substitute the untouched Takeout archive for the folder you actually reviewed.
