Private Photos in Locked iPhone Notes: Check the Original

Adding a photo to a locked note does not delete the original from Photos. Check that the note can be locked and reopened before deciding what to do with the separate library copy.

Verify the locked note before changing Photos

  1. Add a still photo

Use a normal local or iCloud note that can be locked.

  2. Lock and reopen

Check the account and chosen credentials.

  3. Inspect the original

Decide separately what should stay in Photos.

  4. Lock again

Close the account’s temporary unlock window.

The note title remains visible. Video attachments and shared notes cannot be treated like an ordinary lockable photo note.

Start with a note that can be locked

Use an ordinary note stored on your iPhone or in iCloud. Add the still photo through the attachment control. Open the note’s actions and choose Lock. Apple’s locking guide lists important restrictions: shared iCloud notes, Quick Notes and notes synchronized with other accounts cannot use this lock. Notes in Managed Apple Accounts also cannot be locked.

Notes containing video, audio, PDFs, file attachments or tags also have restrictions. This makes a locked note a poor general recommendation for private videos. Check the actual note instead of assuming that anything Notes can attach can also be locked.

Choose credentials you can keep using

In Settings → Apps → Notes → Password, choose the relevant account and review whether it uses the device passcode or a custom Notes password. Apple requires iCloud Keychain for device-passcode locking. Face ID or Touch ID can provide convenient access where configured.

Test reopening the note before changing the original photo. If you choose a custom password, keep a reliable way to remember it. Apple’s password instructions explain that resetting a forgotten Notes password does not unlock old notes protected with that password.

Remember the visible title and unlock window

The note title stays visible in the notes list. Use a neutral title if its wording could reveal the private subject. Locking the contents does not conceal what you wrote in that title.

Opening one locked note also opens other locked notes in the same account for several minutes. When you finish, use the lock control or Lock Now above the notes list. Going back to the list is not the same check as seeing that protected content needs authentication again.

Inspect Photos as a separate location

After confirming the attachment is usable, return to Photos and inspect the original. Adding an attachment is not an instruction to delete that original. If you took the photo inside Notes, also review Settings → Apps → Notes → Save to Photos: Apple documents this option for saving those captures to Photos.

Decide whether the library copy should remain, be hidden in Apple Photos, or be deleted. With iCloud Photos, deleting a library item affects the other devices using that library. A deleted item normally remains in Recently Deleted for 30 days; our deletion guide explains that separate step. Do not discard the only usable copy by accident.

Find forgotten library copies before filing them away

Sensitivity can help review likely nude or sexual images in supported Photos media you authorize. It cannot open locked Notes attachments, manage your Notes password or confirm every exported copy is gone.

Review suggestions yourself and check private documents or text screenshots manually. Detection can miss sensitive images and flag ordinary ones. The useful sequence is to locate a file, choose where it should remain, verify access there, then make a separate decision about other copies.
