Hidden album and sensitive-photo scanning solve different problems.

The Hidden album protects a choice you already made. A scanner can help surface candidates you may have forgotten.

What Apple’s Hidden album does

When you hide a photo or video, Photos removes it from the main Library and other albums and places it in Hidden. On current systems, Hidden and Recently Deleted are locked by default with Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. The Hidden collection itself can also be hidden from view.

What it cannot do for you

Photos does not automatically know which old images you personally consider private. An item reaches Hidden only after someone finds and selects it. A large library can still contain old screenshots, imported media, private videos, or overlooked moments in the normal timeline.

What a scanner adds

A sensitive-photo scanner classifies library items and creates a smaller review queue. That can make a manual search more manageable, especially before a repair, device handoff, migration, or screen share. The result remains uncertain and needs human review.

Use them together

  1. Check what is already in Hidden and Recently Deleted.
  2. Search obvious dates, people, trips, and imported-media contexts manually.
  3. Use a scanner to prioritize additional likely matches.
  4. Review every suggestion in context.
  5. Hide what you want to retain outside the main library.
  6. Delete only after understanding iCloud synchronization and recovery.
Neither feature replaces device erasure

Ask privacy questions before granting access

A scanner needs Photos permission to inspect the library. Check whether classification is local or server-based, whether media identifiers or thumbnails enter analytics, whether an account is required, how results are protected, and whether any action can occur automatically.
