Video privacy

How to find forgotten sensitive videos on iPhone.

A video thumbnail represents one moment. Private content can appear later, which makes video review a different job from scanning still photos.

Start with the Videos collection

In Photos, narrow the library to videos before scrolling. Work by year, trip, relationship, event, or importing app instead of trying to process the whole history in one session. Screen recordings and downloaded clips deserve a separate pass because they often look ordinary from the first frame.

Do not trust a single thumbnail

Scrub through the timeline and check more than the opening frame. A long recording can move between private and ordinary scenes. Live Photos should also be reviewed as motion rather than only as their key image.

A practical sequence

  1. Review short clusters by date or event.
  2. Turn the volume down or use headphones before playback in a shared space.
  3. Check long videos, screen recordings, and clips imported from messaging apps separately.
  4. Use an automated filter only to prioritize what you inspect.
  5. Open every suggested result and review enough of the timeline to understand it.
  6. Hide videos you want to keep private or delete only after checking iCloud and backup consequences.

What on-device video scanning can and cannot do

Sensitivity samples video content locally to suggest likely matches for review. Media is not uploaded to Sensitivity servers. Sampling can reduce the amount of footage to inspect, but no sampling strategy sees every instant, and no classifier understands personal context. Missed content and false positives remain possible.

Human review is required

A suggestion is not a verdict. Never bulk-delete videos based only on a detector score or thumbnail.

iCloud-only videos may need a download

If Photos has optimized storage enabled, the full video may exist only in iCloud. Apple Photos may need to download the media to the device before local analysis or full playback. A download by Photos is different from uploading the media to a scanner’s server.

Finish with Hidden and Recently Deleted

Confirm that media you kept private appears where expected and that anything deleted is still recoverable for 30 days unless you intentionally remove it permanently.
